Introducing Copilot Tasks

The AI environment is changing from chatbots that just answer enquiries to smart assistants that can do tasks on their own. Copilot Tasks, a new feature that Microsoft unveiled on February 26, 2026, is leading the way to the next level of productivity. Copilot can now do more than just answer questions, it can now plan and carry out tasks for you.

For companies that already use Microsoft 365, this is a big change in the way they accomplish their daily tasks. Copilot Tasks wants to make AI into a useful digital assistant that helps teams go from ideas to finished tasks. It does this by managing everyday tasks and making sure that information is shared between systems.

What Is Copilot Tasks?

Copilot Tasks is a new AI feature that turns basic prompts into finished work. To put it simply, you tell Copilot what you want to do in natural language, and then it carries out the steps needed to complete it. Microsoft calls this change “from answers to actions.”

Instead of just suggesting what you should do next, Copilot can now execute tasks on your behalf. This could include gathering information, organising content, completing routine workflows, or coordinating actions across tools.

At the moment, Copilot Tasks is in a limited research preview, meaning Microsoft is testing and refining the technology before wider release. Even at this early stage, it shows where AI-powered productivity is going.

How Copilot Tasks Works

Copilot Tasks follows a simple but powerful workflow: Describe → Plan → Execute → Report back.

A user starts by describing the task they want completed. After that, Copilot makes a plan and follows the procedures in a safe setting using its own secure computer and browser. This lets the AI safely use apps, websites, and services while still letting consumers stay in charge.

You can set tasks to run once, on a schedule, or based on specific conditions. Copilot needs user permission before doing critical things like sending messages or making purchases. This makes sure that businesses have full control.

Key Benefits for Business Owners

Copilot Tasks directly deals with some of the biggest productivity drains business owners face every day. It can go through emails and find the most important ones, and it can even write replies for you. It takes care of scheduling appointments, from booking showings to setting up meetings, without having to go back and forth.

Copilot also speeds up the process of making documents by turning emails, attachments, and photographs into well-organized plans or polished slide decks. It can look at different vendors, get quotations, and suggest the best choices. And it handles things like keeping an eye on hotel prices, booking rides, and keeping track of subscriptions.

People who used Copilot early on have already said that it saved them more than 20% of their time on tasks connected to content. This shows how much more efficient this next version can make things.

Real-World Use Cases You’ll Be Able to Automate

Copilot Tasks is designed to support a wide range of everyday business workflows. Below are some examples directly from Microsoft’s announcement:

  • Daily workflows:
Surface urgent emails each evening, complete with draft replies and generate daily summaries and briefings.
  • Weekly or recurring tasks:
Track new rental listings every Friday, prepare Monday-morning briefings on meetings, travel, and time allocation.
  • Document generation:
Create slide decks from inbox content, transform syllabi into structured study plans, and customise resumes or cover letters automatically.
  • Service-based coordination:
Compare contractors or plumbers, book the best option, monitor hotel pricing, and automatically rebook when rates drop.
  • Logistics & scheduling:
Reserve rides aligned with flight times, manage subscriptions by flagging unused services, and cancel them as needed.

What to Expect at Launch

Copilot Tasks is currently in a limited research preview, with Microsoft gradually adding more users in the coming weeks as they refine the experience with live feedback. Businesses interested in early access can join the public waitlist through Microsoft’s official announcement page. The release also shows a bigger change in the industry, in which AI agents are now transitioning from being experimental tools to being used in everyday business. This marks a big new chapter in digital productivity.

Copilot Tasks is a big change in how organisations use AI. Instead of only answering questions, it can actively complete work. For small and mid-sized businesses, this presents a powerful opportunity to automate routine tasks and reclaim valuable time. Organisations that explore these capabilities early will be better positioned to boost productivity, streamline operations, and stay ahead as AI-driven workflows become the new standard.
